Innovations for Climate Smart Agriculture

About the project

Dry summers, warm winters, heavy rainfall patterns – the effects of climate change are already present. In order to continue food production, it has to become resilient to climate change. Climate smart agriculture is an approach to maintain or even increase productivity under changing conditions.

The aim of the “Innovations for Climate Smart Agriculture” (InnoCSA) project is to support the transformation of the agricultural sector towards climate resilient and climate change mitigating practices. Climate smart agriculture is a new approach, combining different technics and methods, in order to transform the food system from a greenhouse gas emitting sector to a climate neutral or event climate negative sector.

Climate Smart Agriculture

In the learning materials and tried and tested practices, you get to know the concept of climate smart farming. You learn about different agricultural technics that reduce the impact of climate change on the agricultural production on the one hand, and technics to reduce greenhouse gas emissions on the other hand.

Knowing what to do

Furthermore, you get to know methods for developing and implementing new approaches for your agricultural business.

Good Practices

The good practices provide practical insights into climate smart farming. You learn about Dos and Don’ts and find inspiration for your own farm.

Seeing how it works

In the learning materials, you gain knowledge about how to use the presented methods and approaches.

Innovation Management

Together, all learning materials provide you with the knowledge and skills to identify relevant aspects and develop approaches to make your farming practices climate smart

Transforming practices

The learning platform can be your starting point for becoming a climate smart farmer.

More about InnoCSA

The project aims to promote sustainable agricultural practices that help farmers adapt to the changing climate. The project will produce three outputs:

  1. Learning modules on climate smart agricultural production that cover topics such as crop selection, water management, and soil.
  2. Case studies that highlight real-world examples of farmers successfully implementing climate smart solutions on their farms.
  3. Learning modules on innovation management that focus on how farmers can identify, adopt and implement new technologies and practices. The third output is geared towards enabling change and creating awareness of innovation, thereby enabling farmers to try out new methods and integrate them into their operations. In doing so, it helps to ensure that the information and knowledge compiled in the first two outcomes can be effectively put into practice and applied.

A consortium of five partners is implementing the project. The Institute for Rural Development Research (IfLS e.V.) is responsible for project coordination and the development of learning modules for innovation management. The Czech Association of Private Farmers (ASZ) and Farmers’ Association Umbria in Italy are contributing their knowledge of the situation of farmers to the consortium. ASZ leads all dissemination activities to reach farmers in the partners’ countries but also the other European states. CIA Umbria is the lead partner for developing learning modules on the concept of climate smart farming. The German consulting company Farm and Life (HuL) provides first-hand experience on transformation processes in farms and leads the development of case studies. OnProjects develops the learning platform, provides all the necessary technical support. Furthermore, it contributes insights and information about the situation in Spain to learning materials and case studies.

Through the involvement of different partners, the project benefits from a wide range of perspectives, expertise and experiences that help to ensure that the solutions and recommendations are practical, effective and relevant to farmers’ needs.
